A 15 year-old girl, Alexa Longueira, fell down a manhole while texting. She suffered some scrapes after falling. "It was four or five feet, it was very painful. I kind of crawled out and the DEP guys came running and helped me," Alexa told the Staten Island Advance. Her mother is planning to sue the Department of Environment Protection for not having some sort of sign, even though the workers said, ""We regret that this happened and wish the young woman a speedy recovery," as well as Alexa, ""They were just, like, 'I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" I think that this situation can go either way, 50-50. Neither of them should be directly prosecuted. It was the girl's fault for being so into her phone and not paying attention. It was the Departments fault for not having a sign up to demonstrate the upcoming dangers. The only thing that I wonder is, "If there WAS a sign showing the girl, would she have seen it, since she was so into her phone that she didn't see a huge whole beneath her feet?"

Wow. That is pretty crazy! It's dangerous to try to text and really do anything else at the same time, as Alexa found out. You could definitely reference this in a related sidebar to your opinion piece.

ReplyDeleteFAIL! That's hilarious! It just kind of shows you how dangerous and distracting texting really can be. Personally, I think texting is somewhat stupid. Why not use the phone for what it is meant to do (talking)? Texting is impersonal and even more distracting. Calls allow you to actually talk to someone, and do not require the attention of your eyes, making them much safer.

PS- I removed the one above because I forgot to add my name to it and replaced it with this one, in case anyone was wondering.
